Champagne Super Over

Two tense games over the weekend

Champagne Super Over

Two massive games of cricket over the weekend, and if you don’t want to know the score look away now…England won the world cup with a super over and the JAVs won their own local derby against Penn Street thereby winning the series by two matches to one.

A weakened JAVs took to the field following a rallying speech by stand in skipper Steveo Leybourne who summoned up the against the odds attitude of Horatio Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. Fielding first, the JAVs started with some accurate bowling from the young Jamie Hungin who managed to take the wickets of two of Penn Street’s most dangerous batsmen for not many runs. Supported by very tight bowling from the not so youthful Tim Bingle, Penn Street after ten overs were only 38 runs and after 20 overs 95 runs.

Some excellent fielding and more tight bowling enabled the JAVs to restrict Penn Street after 40 overs to a total of 165 runs. T. Sonnex eight overs, three maidens one wicket for 26 runs ably helped by stand in skipper Steveo with eight overs, two maidens, three wickets for 33 runs. A total even Nelson would have settled for at the start.

A rocky start saw the JAVs restricted to 33 runs after 10 overs for three wickets down. With a mountain to climb the middle order set to steady the ship. Step up newbie James Waite who carried his bat for a match winning 55 not out ably supported by debutant Rob Tong 15, old boy Jimbo McCloud 18 off 13 overs and even older boy Tim Bingle 15 all played their part in a great team effort.

A great victory and that is precisely what the beer tasted of at the BBQ that followed. A weekend to remember. Well done JAVs and well done England World Cricket Champions 2019.
